Does just the idea of taking a flight of stairs make your knees scream in pain?

If you’re dreading stairs like many people our age, you wonder if there's anything you can do to help take away the pain, improve your flexibility, or get your 'older' knees working like your 'younger' knees used to!

When I was 62, I spent 3 weeks walking, hiking and climbing around Germany and Paris!  Great trip, but not for the faint-hearted or for the bearers of 'cranky joints'!

(I took this picture of just one of the many sets of stairs we had to climb on the way up to Sacré-Cœur in Paris!)

So... how did I survive all those stairs?

So... how did I survive all those stairs?

But... what about my KNEES?

Several years earlier, I struggled with painful and very weak knees...

so I was a bit worried when we set off for this trip and wondered... would my knees hold up AND ...what would they feel like afterwards!

For 3 weeks, we climbed in and out of the underground stations, up and down stairs in shopping centers, train stations, monuments... you name it!

To my delight... my 62 year old knees performed even better than my 55 year old knees and they felt great... even for days and weeks after our trip!!

 So what changed?

Hydrate!

Let's chat about the unsung hero of joint health: hydration!

Picture this: your joints are like well-oiled machines, gliding effortlessly as you move through your day.

And guess what keeps that fluidity in check? You got it—hydration!

Sipping on water isn't just about quenching your thirst; it's about giving your joints the love and care they deserve. Think of it as a daily dose of TLC for your hard-working hinges.

When you stay hydrated, you're ensuring that your joints stay lubricated, flexible, and ready to tackle whatever life throws their way. So, bottoms up!

Your joints will thank you with every pain-free step you take.

Struggling to drink enough?

If you're like me, it's always been a challenge to stay hydrated.

That was until... I discovered a time tracker water bottle!

It's great and let's you know exactly how much water you need to drink at any certain time of the day.  And if you get behind, you'll know how much to drink to catch up!

64 oz per day is my daily goal and the time tracker bottle has been a very useful tool.  Now I consistently drink enough every day to keep my joints moving smoothly!

Strength and Flexibility

These guys are the dynamic duo when it comes to improving joint movement! Here's how they team up to keep your joints in tip-top shape:

Strength: Building strength in the muscles surrounding your joints provides essential support and stability. When these muscles are strong, they can better absorb shock and protect your joints from injury during movement.

Additionally, strong muscles help maintain proper alignment, reducing the strain on your joints and allowing them to move more smoothly and efficiently.

Flexibility: On the flip side, flexibility helps ensure that your joints have a full range of motion. Stretching helps lengthen tight muscles and tendons, preventing stiffness and improving joint mobility.

When your joints can move freely through their full range of motion, you're less likely to experience discomfort or limitations during everyday activities.

What I do

Hey, I'm not exactly a Jane Fonda or a Richard Simmons...

But after experiencing the incredible benefits, I'm fully on board with moving more to keep my knees happy and my joints strong and flexible.

So I've made a short video to share my favorite strength and flexibility moves with you!

Heads up: Before diving into these exercises, it's a good idea to chat with your doc, especially if you've got any medical stuff going on!

These moves are just my favorites, but they might not be perfect for you especially if you're dealing with certain conditions or injuries.

Take it easy, listen to your body, and if something doesn't feel right, no shame in hitting pause.

Remember, you're in charge of your own journey!

I'm here to walk with you, support you, be your biggest cheerleader, and share some tips on what worked for me!

Natural Food Supplements

What I do

I don't know about you, but sometimes it’s a challenge to eat the right foods ALL the time! Or there are some vitamins, minerals, or herbs that aren’t readily available or are difficult to take in regularly and consistently. That’s where incorporating supplements into your daily routine can be extremely helpful!

By taking natural supplements, you can take in these enhancing components easily and consistently to improve your joint health and reduce the pain that sometimes comes with aging.

My top 3 supplements for 'cranky' knees!

Glucosamine: This one is a superstar and is a natural compound already found in the fluid surrounding our joints! It’s claim to fame is that it helps build healthy cartilage that helps keep your bones from rubbing together. OUCH!!

Collagen: Collagen is the secret sauce that helps maintain the cushy cushions in your joints! Ever heard of synovial fluid? It’s like WD-40 for your joints and collagen helps support the production of this magical juice! With age, our collagen levels naturally decline, leading to creaky joints and achy muscles. Add some collagen goodness to your daily routine and keep those joints feeling young and spry!

Turmeric: Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, is a potent anti-inflammatory agent and it also promotes cartilage integrity, slowing the breakdown of cartilage.

Food Choices

That's right! Believe it or not, the food choices we make can have a significant impact on the health of our joints!

From inflammation-triggering culprits to nutrient-packed superheroes, what we eat plays a crucial role in how our joints feel and function.

I never realized...

How much the food we eat has a direct impact on our joints!!  REALLY!

Some foods are SUPER beneficial and are actually ANTI-inflammatory!

I used to take lots of ANTI-Inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen, Advil, etc. but found that...

incorporating anti-inflammatory foods into my diet was much tastier AND healthi-er long term for my entire body!

And the BEST thing is... these foods don't have any side effects (unless you have an allergy or sensitivity to them!), they are full of nutrients and possess other health benefits like lowering your blood pressure, improving your cognitive function, and avoiding some major chronic diseases!

My TOP 3
Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Let's dig into three categories of my favorite anti-inflammatory foods and discover how they improve your joint health and as a result... decrease pain too!  Yes please!

First on my list are salmon, mackerel, and sardines!

These omega-3-rich wonders are bursting with EPA and DHA—two types of fatty acids known for their potent anti-inflammatory properties.

By adding fatty fish to your plate regularly, you can help dial down inflammation levels and give your joints some serious love.

NOT a fan of fish like me?  Vegan? Here's another way to get your Omega-3s...

Popeye knew what he was talking about when he sang the praises of spinach!

Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are not only packed with vitamins and minerals, but they also boast some serious anti-inflammatory superpowers.

Let's dive in and uncover how they help fight inflammation at the cellular level, keeping your joints happy and healthy!

Rich in antioxidants!

Spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are all loaded with antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and various phytonutrients. These antioxidants help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, which can trigger inflammation and damage cells. By mopping up free radicals, leafy greens help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, keeping your joints and tissues healthy.

Packed with Vitamin-K!

One standout nutrient found in abundance in leafy greens is vitamin K. This essential vitamin plays a crucial role in regulating inflammation in the body by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines.

By ensuring adequate vitamin K intake through foods like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard, you can help modulate the body's inflammatory response and promote overall health.

High in Fiber!

Another key player in the anti-inflammatory game is fiber, and leafy greens are brimming with it.

Fiber-rich foods help support a healthy gut microbiome, which plays a central role in immune function and inflammation regulation.

By promoting a diverse and balanced gut microbiota, leafy greens help keep inflammation in check and contribute to overall well-being.

The anti-inflammatory benefits of spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are truly remarkable.

By incorporating these nutrient-packed greens into your diet regularly, you can harness their potent antioxidant properties, vitamin K content, and fiber-rich goodness to support joint health, reduce inflammation, and thrive in vibrant health. Here's to embracing the power of green and enjoying a deliciously healthy life!
